Seychelles is known for its beautiful environment and surroundings! Both these features make Seychelles a unique holiday destination. Unfortunately, if you are looking for primary forest then you may go for Praslin and Curieuse Islands. You would be able to enjoy the native forests of coco-de-mer on both these islands, as they have been preserved in small reserves.
Do you know that a huge coconut of coco-de-mer, which is approximately 18kg is the largest seed across the world? Unfortunately, most of the broadleaf evergreen rain forests were cut down to plant coconut trees. Well, underplanting is also done, which comprises of avocado, breadfruit, banana, cinnamon, mango, papaya, pineapple and patchouli.
Currently, there are several threats to the flora and fauna of Seychelles which need immediate consideration. For instance, with the ever growing tourism industry of Seychelles, there s huge pressure on the habitats. Enhancement in population especially in the granitic islands is leading to the loss of habitat. One of the significant example is the Seychelles Black Paradise Flycatcher on La Digue Island. Its survival is under serious threat.
Another cause of threat are the introduced and invasive species. For instance, rats are a huge threats for several native animals and plants. Overharvesting also causes threat of extinction of various species. You would be astonished to know that there are several species that are being exploited for sale, export and food.
Disturbance is another threat on flora and fauna. There are several species that are sensitive to disturbances and unable to lay eggs on beaches, such as nesting marine turtles. Other seabird species or Roesate Tern breeds in small colonies. Being vulnerable to disturbances, sometimes their whole colonies become deserted.
In order to save its flora and fauna, government of Seychelles along with the other international agencies is taking some significant steps to preserve this unique biological heritage of stunning islands! |
